Im going to go ahead and say some screamo isnt metal... attack! attack! disgusts me. But there are some good screamo bands out there, atreyu used to be one of them until they got too commercial. Some goes for symphonic metal, which is a step away from melodeath which is my favourite sub-genre :)

Symphonic metal is metal, but a lot of bands that people consider to be symphonic metal aren't actually symphonic metal.

Epica? Kamelot?

And would you say prog metal is metal? like circus maximus, dream theatre, andromeda?

and yes, screamo is not metal. i think we can agree on that.

-edit-
what genre are bands like I Am Ghost and Escape the Fate, and what genre are bands like Akissforjersey and Greeley Estates?

I Am Ghost is kinda half metal, but i wouldn't sit them right into metal.
Escape the Fate is better now IMO because Craig from Bless the fall took over as vocalist. Kinda screamo.

A Kiss for Jersey is christian rock and Greeley estates is kinda softer screamo/metal.

Escape the Fate is definitely better now that Craig is here IMO. He's a far better singer.

Well yes, but now.
I used to love Bless the Fall until Craig left. Now they suck with there new singer Beu (or however it's spelt). He ruins them.

Megadeth = epic win. Killswitch and as i lay dying aint bad as far as screamo/metalcore go. im not much of a bullet fan though. For a recently converted metal head you listen/listened to some pretty good stuff twiz.

I don't really care what people generally define as metal, because according to offical charts Bullet For My Valentine are a Metal band, so it all comes down to personal opinion.
To someone that doesn't listen to metal would, definately class them as metal, just because of the slight screaming.
As for bands i like:
Slipknot
BFMV
Killswitch
Avenged Sevenfold
Disturbed
Just looking for songs that pump me up right now though.

I hate FULL screamo's, stuff like All that remains - This calling where the chorus isn't screaming, i generally like.

It does NOT come down to personal opinion, because it's not personal opinion. Also, the "official charts" call it metal because right now it's cool to be metal, and record labels are all about being being popular.
