I don't really care what people generally define as metal, because according to offical charts Bullet For My Valentine are a Metal band, so it all comes down to personal opinion. To someone that doesn't listen to metal would, definately class them as metal, just because of the slight screaming. As for bands i like: Slipknot BFMV Killswitch Avenged Sevenfold Disturbed Just looking for songs that pump me up right now though. I hate FULL screamo's, stuff like All that remains - This calling where the chorus isn't screaming, i generally like. It does NOT come down to personal opinion, because it's not personal opinion. Also, the "official charts" call it metal because right now it's cool to be metal, and record labels are all about being being popular. I agree with Yilduz on this, sure one can speculate on a bands genre, but thats not WHAT they are.

It's not my opinion. Genres are defined by their sound. You wouldn't say Megadeth is country, and if you did, you'd be wrong... because it's NOT opinion. Saying Slipknot is metal is no more right than calling them reggae.

Hmmmm. i personally think anything that is as heavy or heavier than metallica is metal. its not about the lyrics, its about the use of instruments.

its not about the lyrics, its about the use of instruments. You're right, but you're also wrong. It is mostly about the use of the instruments, but, heavy != metal. Just simply being heavy doesn't make you metal. As far as the lyrics go, the lyrics don't define what metal is (although it can define sub-genres ), but you'll notice a huge difference in the lyrics between real metal bands and the fake garbage that calls itself metal.
